• Rhodocrosite means “rose colored” and was first introduced to North America and Europe around 1934, by Dr. Franz Mansfield. Rhodocrosite is a manganese carbonate that has a variable chemical composition. Sometimes the Manganese is replaced by iron, magnesium and/or calcium. These substitutions during growth affect the color of the Rhodocrosite. Having more iron will cause a brownish response while a higher concentration of manganese will create the most sought after reddish orange color.

  Geographic Origin

  The finest pieces bearing Rhodocrosite in the world comes from Argentina, where it forms as stalagmites and stalactites in ancient Inca silver mines and caves. These stalagmites are formed by precipitation of water dripping down the manganese-rich rock, growing over centuries to large beautiful structures.

  There are very few countries in the world that source high quality crystalline material used for jewelry. Although another source from South America comes from Puru, this Peruvian Rhodocrosite often contains high levels of Iron that cause an undesirable brownish tint, which diminish the gemstones quality and beauty.

  A famous source for Rhodocrosite Specimens comes from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. This mine produces an incredible cherry red Rhodocrosite and its rough specimens are highly sought for and collected. However, this material always grows as rhombohedra and are accompanied by fluorite, quartz, tetrahedrite, and sphalerite. Furthermore, with Rhodocrosite’s softness of 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale, this material is mostly kept as rare specimens and only rarely made into small faceted stones and cabochons.

  The Sweet Home Mine was shut down in October 2010. Because of the loss of material made from a spherical shape, very rarely if ever will you encounter any necklace bearing material from this mine, which is the ideal structure if you are using it to benefit from the energetic healing qualities that Rhodocrosite has to offer.

• Rhodocrosite is a delicate, soft stone that requires consistent care and cleaning. To maintain the therapeutic qualities and physical beauty of your necklace, follow these recommended care guidelines:

  • To cleanse your therapeutic Rhodocrosite necklace, soak it in room-temperature soapy water as you gently rub the gemstone with your fingers. Rinse necklace lightly and dry it with a very soft cloth.
  • Do not wear your necklace during sleep or when there may be pressure or pulling on the strand. Simply place it on a table next to you within three feet of you so that it remains in your energy field.
  • When you are not using your necklace, store it in a jewelry roll or a covered container or drawer. Do not store it in contact with other pieces as the gems may become scratched
  • Avoid exposing your necklace to X-rays, strong electromagnetic fields and chemicals including chlorinated water, perfumes and smoke.
  • Clean two to three times a week by wiping the necklace with a soft cloth.
